As Jio is setting its stage ready for the highly–anticipated 4G service with a bouquet of offers and services, the biggest highlight, which grabbed everyone’s eyeballs during the launch, was Reliance Jio’s ‘free voice calls’, even on roaming. Yes, you read that right. Mukesh Ambani revealed that there will be no charges while making calls anywhere in India, and the users will only pay for mobile data. Reliance Jio 4G services are open for a while now for anyone to avail starting from September 5. However, here is still a lot of confusion in the market on whether the SIM is going to work with all smartphones.
A simple answer is no. That’s because the Reliance Jio 4G service is truely a 4G service, as it claims to be. There is no 2G or 3G signals so phones that are not 4G compatible will not work on this network. Although the sim is readily available to anyone now, it is important to know that the unlimited HD voice service is going to work only on handsets that support VoLTE (Voice over Long Term Evolution). This technology enables Reliance to transmit voice calls over data network which explains how they are able to deliver free-of-cost HD voice services and that too without any roaming charges. 99% of phones that are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon or mediatek chipset have support for VoLTE today. Only VoLTE supported mobiles will get access to true HD Voice call from Reliance Jio 4G network.
Reliance holds the license for 2300 MHz spectrum all over the country plus, 800 MHz spectrum in 10 circles and 1800 MHz spectrum in 6 circles for all kinds of services. A non-VoLTE phone can access 4G data seamlessly however may not be able to make voice calls. Reliance has come out with a workaround to fix this issue with an app called Jio Join (android only). By downloading this app on a 4G phone that does not support VoLTE you can manage to make voice calls over 4G LTE network but don’t expect to get a HD clarity. It is to be noted that mobile data needs to be on continuously to make voice calls, which is not the case with VoLTE supported phones. So which are the phones that work on the service? Jio has already announced partnerships with Samsung, HTC, Micromax, Sony, Vivo, Intex, Lava, Gionee, Panasonic, Asus, Xolo, LG, Karbonn, Videocon, YU, Sansui, Alcatel and TCL.
